Kung Fu Jungle (一个人的武林) Movie Review

I watched the movie preview of Kung Fu Jungle (一个人的武林) yesterday, courtesy of migme. It's a highly anticipated movie because director Teddy Chan made it as a tribute to Hong Kong action cinema. While I couldn't identify all the cameos (I think I watch more HK dramas than action movies), I did recognise a few famous action stars like Tony Leung and Jackie Chan who appeared in the funniest places - the latter in a TV programme within the movie.

List of Interestingness: Volume I x 4 (The Haze Edition)

I've been sorely lacking in inspiration these days because my mind's preoccupied with checking the fluctuating PSI readings of the haze in Singapore. I know this LOI's late, but the writer's block this time is terrible! After racking my brains for a while, I realised that the best way to combat writer's block is to use the very obstacle that's in my way, so here's a special LOI: The Haze Edition.

Warm Bodies (Jonathan Levine) Film Review and Summary

I just caught Warm Bodies today and it was a pretty cool movie (pardon the bad pun, haha). I giggled at the many literary and cultural references and laughed at the self-reflexive, unabashed hilarity. Warm Bodies, based on a novel by Isaac Marion, manages to avoid the pitfalls of most parodies of both films and genres (yes, we know it's a parody of Twilight) and includes the most delightful literary references combined into a successful genre mash-up. It's the movie version of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, only set in the modern day and revolving around another literary couple... I shan't say more yet. I hadn't intended on catching it at first as it seemed quite banal. I was amused by the trailer though, and that's why I decided on Warm Bodies instead of The Croods, which I intend to watch too.

Anyway, on to the meat of the review and a very long summary.

Disney • Pixar’s BRAVE Gala Premiere at the Cathay (22 July 2012) and BRAVE film review

Remember my feature post on Disney • Pixar’s BRAVE? Last Sunday, I attended Disney • Pixar’s BRAVE Gala Premiere at the Cathay, courtesy of Nuffnang Singapore. It was a fun-filled event with many activities going on at the exhibition on the ground floor, near the entrance of the Cathay. Read on for more pictures and a short review of BRAVE, the movie!

Disney • Pixar’s BRAVE film & Musings about Mom

Disney • Pixar’s new animated film, BRAVE, takes on the classic trope of the unconventional and brave heroine who defies custom, brews chaos but ultimately emerges independent and successful at the end of her trials. Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald), the protagonist and heroine of BRAVE, is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus
(voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson) of Scotland. Defying tradition through her actions, she angers the lords of the land: Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane), causing chaos to erupt. Merida has to contend with bad decisions, troublemakers and difficult obstacles to her attempt to undo a beastly curse that she inadvertently brings upon the land through an ill-fated wish granted by the eccentric old Wise Woman (voice of Julie Walters).

Merida's bravery brings to mind a heroine in my own life: my mother. While her story is not as exciting as Merida's, she is in her own way a heroine worthy of respect. She survived the ravages of WWII due to the goodwill of her neighbours, set up a family in Singapore, and once her children were born, bravely quit her job to take care of them. She has been unemployed for 20 years and counting, but this is false. Where are the records to show for her full-time job as a mother?

Featured: Marvel's The Avengers film

Everyone's been waiting for 1 May 2012.

Because that's when the insanely awesome looking new movie, Marvel's The Avengers, is released! Just check out the trailer below. Does it look awesome or what? Unless you're completely not into action movies, comics or Robert Downey Jr. (for the ladies)/Scarlet Johanssen (for the guys), I seriously doubt you'd be missing this blockbuster.

ATM/Er Rak Error (Mez Tharatorn) Film Review

It's all thanks to Golden Village and the omy Blog Club that I got to enjoy this terrifically funny movie about a reel life couple who is every bit as weird and wonderful as, well, the real life couple that is my SO and I. No apologies made for being cheesy here, because cheesy is what ATM (Mez Tharatorn) does so well that it exudes an ironic self-awareness, setting it apart from the more hare-brained comedies proliferating in the movie industry.

[SPOILER ALERT!]
